The DNA Movement
Why we exist.
Dependent, Not Addicted stands for the millions of Americans who are being punished for being sick. This is what we believe, and why we won't be quiet about it.
What happened to us
Chronic pain isn't rare, and it isn't imagined. It touches nearly a quarter of the adults in this country. For many, a prescription medication is the only thing that gives them a workable life — a job, a family, a morning they can get out of bed.
In 2016, federal prescribing guidelines meant to curb misuse were treated as hard rules by pharmacies, insurers, and states. Patients who had been stable and safe for years were force-tapered, cut off, or turned away at the counter. In 2022, the CDC updated that guidance to warn against exactly this — rigid dose limits, rapid tapers, and abandoning patients — but for millions, the damage was already done, and much of it hasn't stopped.
The result is a country where being in pain, and doing everything right, can get you treated like a criminal.
There's a difference, and it matters
Confusing dependence with addiction is the mistake at the heart of all of this. They are not the same thing.
Dependent
Your body relies on a medicine to function — the way a diabetic relies on insulin. You take it as prescribed, and it gives you your life back. That's dependence. It's medical, and it is nothing to be ashamed of.
Addicted
Addiction is compulsive use that damages your life and continues anyway. It's a real condition that deserves real treatment — and it's a different one. Most pain patients have never been addicted to anything.
What we stand for
- Pain patients should be treated as patients — not as suspects.
- Treatment decisions belong between a patient and their doctor, not a spreadsheet or a one-size-fits-all rule.
- An end to forced tapers and blanket dose limits for people who are stable and safe.
- No one should be turned away at a pharmacy counter for a legal, legitimate prescription.
- Dependence on medicine is not a moral failing, and it is not addiction.
Why I started this
My name is Tony Hardy. I'm a chronic pain patient, and I've lived what's on this page — including a pharmacy that decided I was taking too much and refused to fill what my doctor prescribed. I moved my prescriptions somewhere else, but not everyone can, and no one should have to.
I built Dependent, Not Addicted because more than 60 million of us are being punished for being sick, and staying quiet has never protected a single one of us. I have a heart condition, so I'm building this to outlast me. This isn't a campaign that ends. It's a place to stand — for you, for me, and for everyone still being told their pain isn't real.
